Health and Safety
Whether you are a contractor for Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited (HIE) or undertaking works on private property, you have a legal obligation to ensure that the works you are doing are safe - both to your workers and contractors and also those who may be impacted by your works, such as residents, guests and other workers on island.
For more information about your legal obligations in regards to health and safety, please visit the Work health and safety laws page on the Queensland Government’s WorkSafe website.
In addition to your obligations under WHS legislation, there are various other rules, regulations, standards etc. that may apply to the works being undertaken. It’s your responsibility to ensure that you are compliant with these at all times.
For more information, please contact the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.
Contractors working on HIE Projects
If you are working for HIE, your company and all relevant workers (based on HI) must be registered in our online Safety Management System known as Sherm. All your insurances, licences, SWMS and other documentation related to the type of work, will be stored against your company profile. Both Company and Individual registration must be current before workers will be issued with a Contractor ID. Please see Contractors Working on the island for more information about the process.
To check whether a specific company or worker's registration is current in Sherm, please email workhealthsafety@hamiltonisland.com.au for more information.
Private Project Companies and Contractors
If you are working on private projects on HI, you do not need to supply safety documentation to HIE, unless your works impact the safety of others on island. In this instance you may be asked to produce evidence of the steps you have taken to minimise the risks associated with your work.
IMPORTANT
If you are planning to perform works that may adversely affect Island operations i.e. noisy works, dusty works, road closures etc. You must contact the Engineering & Services Office via email at approvals@hamiltonisland.com.au 7 days prior to works starting so that relevant communications can be sent out and operational adjustments made, where required. Failure to do so, may result in unnecessary delays.
For more information, please head to the Building & Planning Approval page.
