Contractors Working on the island
Whether undertaking work directly for Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited (HIE) or work for private property owners, there are guidelines that are required to be followed.
Below is an outline of both requirements and general information necessary to undertake Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited and also private property projects.
Contractors are required to acknowledge and comply with the following:
Hamilton Island Building & Construction Works policy document
Contractor ID Card
All contractors working on the island are required to obtain a Hamilton Island Contractor Card.
This card entitles the holder to a discount on Ferry tickets and entry into the Hamilton Island Staff Restaurant & Bar.
How to Apply for an ID Card
Hamilton Island ID Card Application - Contractor
Step 1: Complete Sections 1 to 3 of the Hamilton Island ID Card Application Form for Contractors.
Step 2: Ask your Principal Contractor or Manager to complete Section 4 of the form.
Step 3: Ensure you have scanned copies of:
- The Contractor ID Card Application Form
- White or Blue Construction Safety induction cards
- all industry relevant licences, tickets and verification of competencies.
Step 4:
- If you are a contractor working for a private property owner or private business, please submit your ID form to the Planning Office at planning@hamiltonisland.com.au
- If you are a contractor working for Hamilton Island Enterprises, please submit your ID form to the Projects Office at projects@hamiltonisland.com.au
Vehicles on the island
Working on Hamilton Island does not automatically allow vehicles on island. Please refer to the following documents which detail how and when a vehicle is permitted on the island:

A valid Temporary Vehicle Permit is required for all vehicles coming to Hamilton Island.
How to Apply for a Temporary Vehicle Permit
Please complete the Temporary Vehicle Permit section of the Barge Booking Request form, as part of your barge booking request.
​Crane Operations
All crane operations proposed within a 3 Nautical Mile (Nm) radius of Hamilton Island Airport, including areas encompassing Hamilton Island, Dent Island, and nearby islands such as Henning, Titan, Plum Pudding, Dungurra, and Cowrie Islands, must be applied for through the submission of a Crane Request form. Forms must be submitted no less than 4 weeks prior to the intended operation.
Hamilton Island Airport will review all requests to verify that the crane operation does not compromise aviation safety and adheres to all applicable aviation regulations. As part of this process, Hamilton Island Airport may refer the request to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Airservices Australia, in accordance with regulatory requirements. Please note that CASA and Airservices Australia assessments can take up to 6 weeks to complete and are independent from the Airport’s assessment.
Conditions may be applied by Hamilton Island Airport to grant approval for crane operations. Failure to adhere to these conditions will result in the withdrawal of approval and potential notification to regulatory authorities.
Note that cranes cannot be transported to or be erected on Hamilton Island without formal approval from Hamilton Island Airport.

Barge Services
Hamilton Island operates a barge service on various days of the week. The days may be subject to change, please check the Barge Booking Request page to confirm which days the barge is operating. All Contractors book their required barge space online.
It is advisable to book as far as possible in advance to guarantee availability of space, with a minimum timeframe of 5 days prior to travel.

Contractors working on HIE Projects
Hamilton Island’s construction company undertakes projects on island and in doing so engages many Trade Contractors to complete works.
If you are working for HIE, your company and all relevant workers (based on the island) must be entered into our online system known as Sherm. Please see the Health and Safety page for more information.
Contractors working on private projects
Contractors working on private properties must obtain approval from the HI Planning office prior to commencement.
