Waste & Recycling
Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited has a long history of effective waste management. Over the years, HIE has continued to improve the on island facilities with the emphasis aimed at decreasing the landfill load and to implement more efficient modes of recycling.
Waste Services for Residents
The Waste Transfer Centre on Hamilton Island is able to accept residential waste and many forms of waste, such as:
- Glass, aluminium and plastic bottles
- Green waste
- Batteries
- Copper
- Scrap steel
- E-waste
- Cardboard
- Waste oil
On receipt of the waste, it is placed in separate areas according to the material and treated in a variety of ways. All waste that can be recycled is sent to Mainland for processing. After the sorting of the waste, if there is any remaining it is then sent to the Mainland as landfill.
Please note: the Waste Transfer Centre is unable to accept commercial or industrial waste.
Damaged Bins
If your waste or recycling bin is damaged or defective, please contact the Waste Management Department on the contact details listed further below.
Bulky Items
Residents or property owners that have bulky items which are unable to be collected kerbside should take the items to the Waste Transfer Facility. Please find location details and a map at the end of this page.
Green Waste and Mulch
Green waste is collected and also mulched on island. The mulch is used on the extensive gardens across Hamilton Island and in doing so helps:
- Prevent weed growth
- Water conservation by providing a protective layer of compost
- Reduce greenhouse gases
- Enrich the soil
- Reduce waste in landfill
Residents on Hamilton Island are able to purchase mulch if there is an excess supply.
Recycling Services for Residents
Several different recycling methods are used on island. Most noticeably there are different coloured lids on the bins to easily assess which bin to use.
Purple Bin - Containers for Change
HIE has set up a program where a portion of the containers collected is donated to the School on Hamilton Island.
There is an app available from the Containers for Change website, which helps distinguish the correct containers.
Yellow Bin – Recycling
Items such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans, glass bottles, glass jars, paper and small items of cardboard such as cereal boxes. All items in the yellow bin need to be loose, so please don’t tie your recycling in a plastic bag – this will result in contamination and consequently be sent to landfill. Please also avoid placing broken glassware such as cups and wine glasses into the yellow bin – this type of glass has a different melting point and cannot be recycled.
Red Bin - General Waste
Items such as food scraps, soft plastics, tissue paper, small household items, plastic bags, broken glassware etc. If you are unsure which bin an item belongs in, it is safest to place it in the red bin. This waste is sent to the mainland for disposal into landfill.
Blue Bin - Cardboard Only
Please flatten boxes, remove any plastic wrap and polystyrene. Our cardboard is baled into cubes, and then sent back to the mainland for recycling. Waxed cardboard, usually used for fresh food, cannot be recycled so please place in the red bin.
Skip Bins
The Waste Management Department has 15-metre skips available to anyone on island for hire.
To obtain a quote for skip bin hire, or arrange delivery of a skip to your site, please email the department on waste@hamiltonisland.com.au.
Please note: the Waste Transfer Centre is unable to accept commercial or industrial waste. For more information, please contact the department using the details below.
