Dean’s Top 5 Running Tips Posted by Hamilton Island - 8 December 2021 Dean Degan is a Bondi Lifeguard and ambassador for the Hamilton Island Endurance Series. Below are his top running tips. 1. Start off with a good-quality, well-fitted pair of running shoes. You don’t want to get injured. 2. Get yourself onto a program. This really helps and gives you purpose to get out the front door. There’s nothing better than ticking off sessions on the list every week. If you can’t physically make a running group you can always get a coach to do you an online program. 3. Try running with company or find a local running group – this makes running more enjoyable. Parkrun every Saturday is a great way to meet people and get a good run in. It’s one of the best sessions you can do. 4. The long run is one of the most important sessions of the week to build strength and fitness, but that needs to be built up. Don’t just jump straight into runs that go over an hour. When starting off building up mileage, if possible, try to get off hard surfaces by either running on grass or trails. 5. Don’t be afraid to rest. If you are getting out of breath or feeling flat, don’t be frightened to have an easy day or take the day off, you’ll be stronger the next day! A good friend and previous winner of the Hawaiian Ironman is a big believer in this.
